To say that I loved the book Something Borrowed is a bit of an understatement. Anyone who has heard my gush about this Emily Giffin book can tell you that my love for it extends past anything that is remotely healthy. Maybe that's weird, but it's true.
I read this book on a road trip and found myself struggling to put it down! Giffin created a world similar to that of many young women like myself: The perfect best friend making the not-so-perfect side of the equation feel uncool. I related to her characters on both sides and found them to be quite real. Rachel and Darcy were distant memories of my high school friendships. Dex was the boy we all dreamt of dating. Marcus was the partier we all know and love.
She created situations which were both unfathomable and real at the same time. They were reminders of daily life and so vivid that you couldn't help but believe in every word she wrote.
The only downside was that the plot occasionally repeated itself, but the emotions she shared from Rachel's point of view were too good to ignore and I found myself simply letting it all go as she spoke of the awkward feelings from the situation or how much it hurt her to be in a situation which was considered uncouth by societies standards.
As a great read, I felt myself squealing for my new found companion and wanting to cry when things didn't go her way. Giffin did a phenomenal job of creating a world where her readers could live for a short time and keeping them captivated until the last words.
I give Something Borrowed a strong score of four music notes. It's a recommended read for any fan of adult fiction and any girl who has ever felt beat down by her best (and oh-so-perfect) friend. ♩ ♩ ♩ ♩
